Parents, friends, and clients of Trade In Solutions, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) highest rating of booster seats for 2024 is out. The new list doesn’t include “not recommended” models, and the prices of the children’s seats could be less than $40.
Booster seats are simple, low-tech devices that don’t have to cost a lot to be effective, said Jessica Jermakian, IIHS vice president of vehicle research. Explained the features and job of seat adaptors and the security of kids between 4 and 8 years.
Booster seat categories according to IIHS:
- BEST BETs are seats that provide a good belt fit for typical 4 to 8-year-olds in almost any car, minivan, or SUV.
- GOOD BETs provide an acceptable belt fit in most cars, minivans, or SUVs.
- Check Fit applies to booster seats the IIHS has tested that have varied results depending on child size and vehicle model.
- The category “Not recommended”; doesn’t provide a good belt fit and should be avoided.

A booster seat helps to improve the position of your children in the car so that the security belt fits and secures them.
IIHS has been rating boosters on their ability to provide good lap and shoulder belt fit for children since 2008.
Safety experts say a good booster places the belt at the center of the child’s shoulder.
“It’s not riding up on the neck or falling off the shoulder, and the lap belt is low across the hips ”really on the upper thigh” not riding up into the belly,” Jermakain said.
The United States Department of Transportation enforces the security of infants and children while traveling in a car, no matter the distance.
